Stranded Whale goes Out with a Bang - The Sydney Morning Herald
"Explosives have been used to euthanase a sickly humpback whale which washed up onto a sandbar off Western Australia's southwest coast."
Um...WHAT?! Am I reading this right?
The DEC was going to let the animal die of natural causes, but instead decided to BLOW IT THE HELL UP.
This is ridiculous.
"In a statement, DEC Albany district manager Mike Shepherd said the whale had moved a couple of metres from its original position, which was enough to stabilise the whale and kill it humanely."
I dunno about you, but I don't really consider dynamite "humanely."
Don't these people know what happened during the last attempt blow up a whale?

Greenland Begins Whale Hunt, Illegally - Mother Jones
This really just pisses me the hell off. Greenland hasn't hunted whales for 60 years, and now they suddenly need to again? Bullshit.
I'm even more pissed off that the whales that travel there will potentially be the whales I see when I go whale watching at home. What if they kill Salt?!?! I would honestly cry.
So, at the complete disaster of IWC this year (more), Greenland was granted 27 humpback whales. But if that's not enough, they've begun the hunt early - illegally. The kills were granted for aboriginal hunts only, but whale meat has been finding its way into the mainstream market. Surprise surprise.
Extremely disappointing.

A Tragic Day for Humpback Whales - WSPA
Updates from the IWC meetings:
Greenland has been awarded nine humpback whale kills per year for the next three years. The country has not hunted whales since the moratorium was put into place in 1986, so this movement is actually an increase in the number of future whale deaths, not a decrease as many had hoped this meeting would lead to. The need for whaling in Greenland is controversial; Greenlanders say it is for an aboriginal hunt, but since the moratorium has been put in place and the hunt ceased they have not shown any evidence of the need to reinstate it.
This development particularly worries me, as the whales that will be hunted could possibly be the familiar flukes I've come to recognize on whale watches off of New England.
"WSPA’s 2008 investigation ‘Exploding Myths’ showed that around a quarter of Greenland’s whaling is commercial in nature and it seems that commercial markets are only increasing."
As the IWC comes to a close, environmentalists are grateful that the moratorium was not lifted, but saddened that the illegal hunting of whales will continue by rebel nations.
